The End

For some it was the end in 2017.  They didn’t pass away.  They are still above room temperature and with us but it was the end.  So, may they rest in peace.

Here lies Roy Moore

4 girls whose ages didn’t reach 44

No Senator Roy from Alabama,

No Moore.

R.I.P. 2017
And Harvey, Big Harvey Weinstein man of countless accusations that he has ignored, did respond to Salma Hyak’s Op-ed piece in the New York Times.  Salma recalled with great pain how he sexually harassed her.  And, Big Harvey’s response was not to deny the charges and say it never happened, just that “other people” remembered things differently.  Since her story has them alone during these encounters and we imagine almost all sexual harassment takes place when people are not out in a crowd, we feel safe in concluding that Big Harvey is the “other people” he’s referring to.  And, it must be that he recalls the groping, the grabbing and the whipping out of his genitalia, not with humiliation and shame but rather with a sense of the sublime.  R.I.P. Big Harvey 2017.

First he said it was a criminal investigation into HerHillaryness’s HomeBrewedServer.  Then he concluded that there were lapses in judgment but there was no criminal intent and there would be no indictments in the HomeBrewServerghazi.  But then just days before the election someone must have showed him some polls where The Donald Himself was going to win and he reopened the HomeBrewServerghazi.  Then the election happened and it didn’t much matter one way or the other, so the HomeBrewServerghazi was over… again.  Then he told the new President the Donald Himself he wanted to stay as Head of the FBI.  Then he got to hear those magic words that have been spoken to quite a few people over the years, including one Omarosa Manigault, like four times now.

“You’re fired!”

Then he went before Congress and cried.  Then he cried in the New York Times.  Then he pretty much cried to anyone who would stop to listen.  Now and then he issues a tweet but for J. Edgar Comey, it’s… R.I.P. 2017

  • Don, though I’m shedding no tears for the likes of Roy Moore and Harvey Weinstein, it was literally the end in 2017 for some who deserve to be remembered, including Mary Tyler Moore, Roger Moore, Glen Campbell, Jerry Lewis, Fats Domino, Della Reese, Jim Nabors, and even “Mr. Congenialty” (Don Rickles)….not to mention a gal who lived so long that she outlived her own popularity, Bea Wain (great big band singer who died in August at age 100). R.I.P., one and all.

  • Muse, you’re absolutely correct and they were all wonderful and talented people who gave a lot. In fact so good that they don’t deserve to be remembered here by me.

  • Richard the IVth, we come not to praise Moore or even to bury him. Just to mark the end. It’s good to know that God agrees with us although unlike Roy Moore in your column He did not stop by to talk to us.

  • Don,

After reading this, the Doors’ “The End” keeps running through my head. And Hemingway’s short story “The End of Something.” So many “ends,” but where are the “new beginnings”? Yes, as Muse points out, we lost a lot of good ones this past year.

  • Mark,

Whether people had a great year like Aaron Judge or whether it was The End for them like it was for Kevin Spacey, 2017 was a helluva year. But 2017 is over and 2018 is calling to us like the Sirens to Odysseus. Let us hope we can steer clear of the rocks and keep sailing on.
